Meet Benjamin Hart: Class of 2023

“During my youth I was always in trouble,” says Benjamin Hart, Cuyamaca College commencement student speaker for 2023.

After dropping out of Mission Bay High School his freshman year, Benjamin’s mother sent him to live with his father in Texas. Finding the change of scenery beneficial, Benjamin completed his GED in 2003, the same year he would have graduated high school.

Grossmont President Plans for Retirement

After serving as Grossmont College President for five years, Dr. Nabil Abu-Ghazaleh is retiring at the end of this semester. Abu-Ghazaleh announced his early retirement plans back in September. 

“I am leaving my post to spend more quality time with my wife,” he stated in his announcement.

Grossmont’s API Committee on Heightened Anti-Asian Pacific Islander Racism

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of anti-Asian and anti-Pacific Islander hate crimes has grown at an alarming rate. 

In response to this issue, three members of Grossmont College’s Asian-Pacific Islander (API) committee presented a resolution to the Academic Senate March 1.

Dr. Josh Franco

“People would make fun of me because my true name is Josue not Josh,” he said. In school, teachers would call out “Jo-soo” when taking attendance; some even misgendering him.

By the second grade, Franco had had enough and walked up to his teacher and let her know that she can just call him “Josh.”

Cuyamaca Alumnus Representing the U.S in the 2020 Olympics

Cuyamaca College alumnus Nick Christie, 29, is competing in the long-awaited 2020 Olympics on the USA Track and Field team. Christie is set to compete in the 20k Racewalk tonight at 12:30 a.m. PST.  

According to Cuyamaca coach Patrick Thiss, Christie is the first Track and Field Olympian from a San Diego Community College in over 20 years.

College is for Me

Cuyamaca College has partnered with Cajon Valley Middle School on a new program called College is for Me. The program aims to get middle schoolers excited about higher education by introducing them early to college campuses and courses. 

While Cajon Valley Assistant Principal Vidalia Resendes was doing her doctoral research, she learned that children begin to feel disengaged from education around middle school.
